That sharp, acrid hit that makes your eyes water is your coil heating cotton with no liquid on it. The good news: nine times out of ten it is one of five causes, and four of them cost nothing to fix.
The short version
- A burnt taste means the cotton in your coil is drier than the heat hitting it.
- New coil? Prime it and wait five minutes. Old coil? It is probably finished.
- Drop the wattage to the bottom of the range printed on the coil, then work up.
- Very sweet or high-VG liquids clog coils fastest. Swap flavours if coils die in days.
What a burnt hit actually is
Every coil is a strip of metal wrapped in cotton. When you draw, the metal heats up and vaporises the e-liquid soaked into the cotton. If the cotton cannot pull liquid back in fast enough, the metal starts heating dry cotton instead, and that is the taste you are getting: scorched fibre.
A dry hit is the sudden, harsh version (one puff and you know). A slow burn creeps in over days as the coil gunks up. They have different fixes, so work out which one you have first.

Find your cause in 30 seconds
Answer one question and we will point you at the fix. Most people get the answer on the first tap.
When did the burnt taste start?
The cotton was not fully soaked. Remove it, put 3 or 4 drops of liquid straight onto the cotton through the holes, refill, then leave it standing for 5 minutes before your first puff. Take a few gentle draws without firing first.
You are chain vaping faster than the wick can keep up, or the liquid level dropped below the coil's wicking holes. Refill, wait two minutes, and leave a few seconds between puffs.
The coil is gunked up and reaching the end of its life. Look at the cotton: brown or black means replace it. Sweet liquids do this fastest.
You are over the coil's rating. Check the watt range printed on the side of the coil and stay in the lower half of it.
Power: the cause nobody checks
Every coil has a recommended power range stamped on it, for example 0.8 ohm, 12 to 18W. Running it above that range boils the liquid off the cotton faster than it can refill. Running it at the very top of the range with a thick, high-VG liquid does the same.
Start at the bottom of the range and step up one or two watts a day until the flavour peaks. The moment it turns harsh, step back down. If your kit has no power setting, it is matched to its coils already, so skip to the next section.

Your liquid might be the problem
Two things in e-liquid kill coils: sweeteners and thickness. Sucralose in dessert, candy and some fruit liquids caramelises on the coil and leaves black gunk. Thick 70/30 or 80/20 VG liquids soak into cotton more slowly, which is fine in a sub-ohm tank but too slow for a tight MTL pod.
Rule of thumb: nic salts and 50/50 liquids for pods, 70/30 shortfills for sub-ohm tanks.

Myths that keep burning coils
Some advice gets passed around forums and it is just wrong. Tap a card to see the truth.
Make every coil last longer
Do these and most vapers see their coils last noticeably longer. Tick them off as you go.
Test yourself
One question to make sure it stuck.
You fit a new coil and the first puff tastes burnt. What went wrong?
Quick answers
Can you fix a burnt coil?
No. Once the cotton is scorched the taste stays. Replace the coil or pod and prime the new one properly.
How long should a vape coil last?
Anywhere from three days to two weeks. Sweet liquids, high power and chain vaping shorten it; clear liquids and moderate power stretch it.
Why does my new coil taste burnt?
The cotton was not fully soaked. Prime it with a few drops of liquid, refill, and wait five minutes before your first puff.
Is a burnt hit dangerous?
It is unpleasant rather than an emergency, but burnt cotton is not something you want to keep inhaling. Stop, refill or replace the coil, and carry on.
