It worked perfectly before you topped it up and now it will not fire, tastes burnt or gurgles. Refilling is the moment things go wrong most often, and the fix is usually as simple as drying something or waiting a few minutes.
The short version
- Liquid on the contacts after filling is the top cause of no-pod errors.
- Overfilling floods the coil; underfilling below the wick holes dries it.
- A refilled empty pod needs a few minutes for the wick to soak again.
- Prefilled pods are not designed to be refilled.
What went wrong during the refill?
Three things happen during a refill that can upset a pod. Liquid can drip onto the contacts. The coil can flood if the pod is overfilled or squeezed. Or the coil can run dry if you let it empty right out before refilling and vaped straight away.
Each gives different symptoms. Pick yours from the finder below.
If the refill went in through the wrong hole, it may have gone straight into the airflow. On some pods the fill port and the airflow sit close together, and it is an easy mistake to make in a hurry.
What is the pod doing now?
Liquid on the contacts. Remove the pod, dry both contact sets with a tissue and reseat.
The wick dried out while the pod was empty. Leave it five minutes to resoak; if still burnt, replace the pod.
Overfilled or flooded. Blow gently through the mouthpiece with the device off and wipe the base.
Liquid went into the airflow. Clear it by blowing through and dabbing the airflow hole.
Refill the clean way
A tidy refill takes the same time as a messy one and avoids every problem above. The key is working away from the device and letting the wick settle afterwards.
Always remove the pod from the device before filling. Hold it at a slight angle and fill slowly against the inside wall, so air can escape and liquid does not splash into the chimney.
Stop at the max line. Close the bung firmly until it sits flush, wipe the outside and the base, then stand the pod upright for a few minutes before you vape.
- Remove the podNever fill it while it is in the device.
- Open the fill portFind the bung or side port, not the airflow or mouthpiece.
- Fill slowly at an angleAim at the inside wall to let air out.
- Stop at the max lineLeave a little room at the top.
- Seal and wipePush the bung flush and dry the pod base and contacts.
- WaitStand it upright for a few minutes before vaping.
Refill before it runs dry
The wick holes in a pod coil sit a little way up from the bottom. Once the liquid drops below them, the cotton stops getting fed, even though you can still see some liquid in the pod.
Vaping on in that state dries and scorches the cotton, and no amount of refilling brings back a scorched wick. That is why a pod that ran empty can taste burnt after a refill.
Topping up when the pod is about a third full keeps the wick soaked and avoids the problem altogether. Use 50/50 or nic salt liquid, which pod coils are built for.

Prefilled pods are not for refilling
Prefilled pods, like the Elf Bar Mate 500 P1 pods, are sealed and designed to be used once and then replaced. They are not built to be opened, and forcing them open can damage the seals and the coil.
If you want to refill, use a refillable pod made for your kit. Several kits offer both: the Elf Bar Mate 500, for example, also has a refillable pod.
Refillable pods have a fill port with a rubber bung, and they do wear out. After about a week of use, a pod that keeps misbehaving after refills is usually ready for replacement.
Refill mistakes
A few habits cause most refill trouble. Tap each card to check whether you are doing one of them.
Rushing is the theme. Filling in the device, vaping the second you close the bung, and filling until it overflows all save a few seconds and cost you a working pod.
If a pod keeps failing after every refill even when you do everything right, it has probably reached the end. Pods are consumables, and our replacement pods are cheap compared with fighting a worn one. Keep a spare in the drawer and a bad refill never leaves you stuck.
Quick answers
Why did my pod stop working after I refilled it?
Usually liquid on the contacts, an overfilled or flooded coil, or a wick that dried out before refilling. Dry the contacts, wait a few minutes, then test.
How long should I wait after refilling a pod?
A few minutes after a top-up, and around five minutes if the pod ran empty, so the cotton can soak.
Can I refill prefilled pods?
They are not designed for it. Use a refillable pod made for your kit instead.
Why does my pod taste burnt after refilling?
The wick dried and scorched while the pod was empty. Rest it after refilling; if the taste stays, replace the pod.
