Check pod

Vape says check pod or no pod? Get it detected again

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

When a kit cannot see its pod, the fault sits in a space about the size of a fingernail: the two little contacts where pod meets battery. Clean them properly and most check pod errors disappear on the spot.

The short version

  • Liquid or condensation on the contacts is the most common cause by far.
  • A pod that is not fully clicked in reads as no pod.
  • Try a second pod: if that works, the first pod's coil has failed.
  • If no pod works, the device's own contacts or electronics are the problem.

Why a kit stops seeing its pod

Your device checks for a pod by sending a tiny current through the two contacts at the bottom of the pod and reading the coil's resistance. If the current cannot get through, or the reading is outside what the device expects, it flags an error.

That error looks different on different kits. Screens might show check pod, no pod or no atomizer. Kits with just an LED usually flash a set number of times instead, which our flashing lights guide decodes.

Whatever the wording, the fault is in one of three places: the pod's contacts, the device's contacts, or the coil inside the pod.

Check pod fault finder

Use what happens when you swap things around to narrow it down. If you have a spare pod, this takes about two minutes.

The spare pod test is the single most useful thing you can do. It immediately tells you whether to blame the pod or the device, which stops you binning a perfectly good kit because one pod coil gave up. Pods are consumables; devices should outlive dozens of them.

If you do not have a spare, start with cleaning, because it fixes the majority of these errors and costs nothing more than a cotton bud.

Who is at fault?

Clean the contacts the right way

A drop of e-liquid or condensation across the contacts is enough to confuse the reading. Sweet liquids are worse because they leave a sticky film that dries hard.

Use a dry cotton bud or a folded tissue first. If there is sticky residue, very slightly dampen the bud with water, wipe, then dry thoroughly. Never pour water into the device, and never use anything metal to scrape the contacts.

On kits with spring-loaded pins, press each pin gently with the bud. It should spring back up. A pin stuck down cannot touch the pod and gives you a permanent no pod error.

  1. Remove the podPull it straight out and set it on a tissue, mouthpiece up.
  2. Wipe the pod baseDry the two metal contacts on the bottom of the pod.
  3. Clean the deviceRun a dry cotton bud around the pins and magnets inside the device.
  4. Check the pinsPress each spring pin gently and make sure it pops back up.
  5. Air dryLeave both parts open for ten minutes if anything was wet.
  6. Reseat firmlyPush the pod in until you feel or hear the click.

Is it the right pod?

Pods that look identical are not always compatible. Manufacturers update pod designs between kit generations, and an older or newer pod can fit physically but use a different contact layout or resistance.

Check the kit name on the device and the pod packaging. Our replacement pods list which kits each pod fits. If your device lets you set a pod type or resistance, make sure it matches what is fitted.

Prefilled pod systems are fussier still: some only accept pods from their own range, and a pod from a similar-looking kit simply will not register.

Pro tip

Habits that prevent check pod errors

Most detection problems start with liquid where it should not be. Stop it reaching the contacts and you rarely see the error again.

Filling is the main risk. A drip that runs down the outside of the pod while you refill goes straight to the contacts when you click it back in. Fill over a tissue and wipe the pod before reseating it.

Leaks are the other source. If you are wiping liquid out of the device every day, read our pod leaking guide and fix the cause rather than the symptom.

Keep the contacts dry

Quick check

Here is one that trips people up. The answer depends on noticing which part has changed and which has not.

When a kit has been working fine for weeks and suddenly cannot see any pod at all, including brand new ones, think about what all those pods have in common. They all meet the same set of contacts inside the device.

If cleaning those does not help, the device may have a fault, and our help page explains how to raise it if the kit is still under warranty. Keep your order details handy when you get in touch.

Three different pods, including a brand new one, all show no pod. What should you check?

Quick answers

Why does my vape keep saying check pod?

Usually wet or dirty contacts, a pod that is not fully clicked in, or a failed coil. Clean both contact sets and try a spare pod.

How do I clean vape pod contacts?

Use a dry cotton bud or tissue. For sticky residue, a barely damp bud followed by thorough drying. Never use metal tools or pour water into the device.

Can a new pod be faulty?

It happens occasionally. If a second new pod from the same pack works, the first one was faulty.

Why does my pod only work if I press it in?

The contacts or magnets are not making a firm connection. Clean them, and replace the pod if it sits loose.
