New liquid tastes like nothing? Here is what is going on

3 min readUpdated 4 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

You open a new bottle, fill up and get nothing, or worse, a faint ghost of your last flavour. The liquid is very rarely the problem. The coil, the mixing or your palate usually is.

The short version

  • Coils hold on to old flavours, especially menthol, aniseed and strong candy.
  • A fresh coil is the cleanest way to taste a new liquid properly.
  • Shortfills with a nic shot need a thorough shake before they taste right.
  • Your palate may be tuned to your old flavour for a day or two.

Why new liquids can taste blank

The cotton in your coil soaks up flavour compounds as well as liquid. Strong flavours like menthol, aniseed, cinnamon and heavily sweetened candy cling to the wick and keep coming through long after you switched bottles. That old note can mask or clash with the new one so it tastes muddy or empty.

Your senses play a part too. After weeks on one liquid, your brain expects that flavour and can take a little while to register a different one.

And sometimes the liquid simply has not mixed or wicked yet. All three are fixable, usually within the hour.

What did you switch from and to?

Fresh coil, fresh start

If you switch flavours often, the simplest system is one coil per flavour family. Many vapers keep a coil or pod for menthol and another for fruits and desserts, swapping as they change bottles.

When you fit a new coil for a new liquid, prime it properly. A few drops on the exposed cotton, fill up, then leave it five minutes. A half-soaked wick tastes thin and papery, which makes a good liquid seem flavourless.

Our replacement coils and pods are cheap enough that a fresh one for a new bottle is a small price for tasting it properly.

  2. Fit a fresh coilEspecially after menthol, aniseed or very sweet liquids.
  3. Prime the cottonDrip a few drops onto the wick through the coil holes.
  4. Fill and waitFill with the new liquid and leave it five minutes.
  5. Start lowTake gentle puffs at the lower end of the coil range, then adjust.

Shortfills need mixing

A shortfill bottle leaves room for a nicotine shot. Add the shot and you have two liquids that need properly combining. Unshaken, the shot sits as a layer and the first few fills can taste weak and harsh at the same time.

Close the cap tight, shake firmly for a minute, and let the bubbles settle. Some flavours, especially custards and tobaccos, taste fuller after a few days of rest, a process called steeping.

If you added more than one shot, use the calculator to check your final strength. Nicotine is addictive, so know what you are vaping.

Flavours that ghost the most

Some flavours are far stickier than others. The chart shows a rough ranking of how stubborn different families tend to be in a coil, based on common vaper experience rather than lab testing.

If your previous liquid was near the top, plan on a new coil. If it was near the bottom, a tank or two of the new liquid usually clears it.

Plastic pods and tank seals can hold a faint scent too. Rinse a refillable pod or tank in warm water and let it dry completely before refilling with the new flavour. Never rinse the device itself.

Quick check

One scenario to test the method. Think about what the coil has been soaking in, rather than what is in the bottle now.

Menthol is one of the hardest flavours to shift because it is intense and lingers in cotton and plastic. Even a strong fruit can be drowned out by it for a full tank or more.

Once you know which flavours ghost, switching gets much easier. You will start planning coil changes around bottle changes and stop blaming perfectly good liquids. Our weak flavour guide covers the wider picture.

You switch from a strong menthol to a mango liquid in the same coil. It tastes faint and oddly cold. What is the best fix?

Quick answers

Why does my new e-liquid taste of nothing?

The old flavour may be stuck in the coil, the liquid may not be mixed, or your palate is tuned to your old flavour. Fit a fresh coil and shake the bottle.

Do I need a new coil when changing flavour?

Not always, but it helps a lot after menthol, aniseed, cinnamon or very sweet liquids, which linger in the cotton.

Do shortfills need steeping?

They need shaking after adding a nic shot. Some flavours, like custards and tobaccos, taste fuller after resting a few days.

Can I rinse my tank between flavours?

Yes, rinse the tank or refillable pod in warm water and dry it completely. Remove the coil first and never get the device wet.
