Coil gunk

Gunked-up coil? Why it happens and how to slow it down

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Every coil slowly cakes itself in a dark crust of cooked e-liquid. How fast that happens depends mostly on what you vape. Know the signs and the causes and you can stretch every coil further.

The short version

  • Gunk is sweeteners and flavourings that caramelise on the hot coil.
  • Dark cotton, muted flavour and a toasty taste are the signs.
  • Sweet, dark and heavily flavoured liquids gunk coils fastest.
  • Pre-made pod and tank coils cannot really be cleaned; replace them.

What gunk actually is

When e-liquid vaporises, not everything in it turns cleanly into vapour. Sweeteners like sucralose, and some flavourings, can partly cook on the hot metal and leave a residue. Over hundreds of puffs that residue builds into a dark, crusty layer on the coil and in the cotton.

That crust stops liquid reaching the metal properly and stops heat transferring cleanly. The result is muted flavour, less vapour and eventually a burnt taste even with a full tank.

Gunk is the main reason coils wear out. A coil running clear, unsweetened liquid can last many times longer than the same coil running a sugary dessert.

Is your coil gunked?

The signs creep in gradually, which is why so many people vape on a gunked coil for days without realising. Look for these, roughly in the order they appear.

The colour of the liquid in the tank is a handy early warning. If a clear liquid starts turning brown in the tank, residue from the coil is leaching back into it.

Look through the wicking holes at the cotton too. Pale or golden is fine. Brown to black means the coil has had it. Muted flavour plus dark cotton is about as clear a verdict as a coil can give you, so do not argue with it.

What is gunking yours so fast?

If your coils are dying in two or three days, something in your setup is speeding it up. Use the finder to narrow it down.

Liquid choice is usually the answer. Heavily sweetened desserts, candies and some fruit liquids leave far more residue than menthol, tobacco or clear fruit. Dark liquids, like coffee and custards, also tend to gunk faster.

Power plays a part. The hotter the coil, the faster sweeteners caramelise, so running at the very top of the range costs coil life. Dropping a couple of watts is an easy test: if the next coil lasts longer, you have your answer.

What do you mostly vape?

Can you clean a gunked coil?

For the pre-made coils used in pods and most tanks, not really. Rinsing in water or soaking can shift some loose residue, but the cotton is already discoloured and the taste rarely comes back fully. It is a short reprieve at best.

Never dry-burn a pre-made coil to clean it. That is a technique for rebuildable coils with no cotton fitted, and on a standard coil it just scorches the wick.

Rebuildable atomisers are different: you can rewick them with fresh cotton and clean the wire. For everyone else, a fresh replacement coil is the answer.

Slow the gunk down

You cannot stop gunk altogether, but you can slow it dramatically. These habits are the ones that make the biggest difference.

Rotating a clearer liquid in between your sweet favourites is the best trick. Many vapers keep a menthol or a light fruit for half the day and save the dessert for the evening.

Keeping the tank above a third full and leaving a few seconds between puffs protects the cotton from scorching, which stacks the odds in your favour. Swap the coil as soon as flavour fades, rather than vaping on until it tastes burnt, and each new coil starts in a cleaner tank.

Quick answers

What causes coil gunk?

Sweeteners and some flavourings in e-liquid caramelise on the hot coil and build up as a dark residue.

How do I know if my coil is gunked?

Muted flavour, less vapour, a toasty or burnt taste, liquid darkening in the tank and brown or black cotton.

Can I clean a gunked vape coil?

Not effectively for pre-made coils. Rinsing gives a small, short improvement at best. Replace it.

Which e-liquids gunk coils the most?

Heavily sweetened desserts, custards and candy flavours, plus dark liquids like coffee.
