If your kit used to last all day and now dies by lunch, something is drawing more power or the battery holds less than it did. The numbers behind it are simple, and a few changes can get you back to a full day.
The short version
- Lower resistance and higher wattage both drain the battery faster.
- Lithium batteries lose capacity with age and charge cycles.
- Cold weather temporarily cuts how much power a battery can deliver.
- A battery that drains while you are not using it may have a fault.
Where the power goes
Every puff takes energy from the battery. How much depends on the power the coil uses and how long you hold the puff. A big sub-ohm coil at high wattage can use several times more energy per puff than a small MTL pod coil.
Ohm's law shows why. At the same voltage, halving the coil resistance doubles the power, and doubling the power drains the battery twice as fast. Try the calculator below with your coil's resistance to see how many watts and amps it pulls.
Battery capacity is the other half of the story. A kit with a 1500mAh battery holds far more than one with 500mAh, so a small kit running a thirsty coil drains very fast.
That is about 17W and draws 4.6A from the battery
What is draining yours?
Pick the pattern that matches and start with that fix. The answers run from habit changes to hardware problems.
Many vapers find the drain started when they changed coil or setting. Moving from a 0.8 ohm coil to a 0.4 ohm coil, or nudging the wattage up for more flavour, makes a big difference to battery life without feeling like much of a change.
Drain while the kit sits unused is different and needs more care, because it can point to a fault rather than a habit. A healthy kit sitting locked in a drawer should lose very little charge over a few days.
When did the fast drain start?
Lower resistance or higher power uses more energy. Go back to a higher-ohm coil or drop a few watts.
The battery is ageing. Lithium cells hold less charge as they go through charge cycles. Replace the battery or device.
Cold temporarily reduces battery output. Keep the kit in an inside pocket and it should recover indoors.
Possible fault or auto-firing. Check it is not getting warm on its own. If it is, stop using it.
Coil resistance versus battery life
The chart shows the power each coil resistance draws from a fully charged 3.7V battery on a simple unregulated circuit. Real kits regulate the output, but the pattern holds: lower resistance means more watts, and more watts means more drain.
If battery life matters more to you than clouds, a higher-ohm MTL coil is the single biggest change you can make. Our coil range lists the resistance on every option.
Remember that power and nicotine work together. A lower-power MTL setup usually pairs with higher-strength nic salts, and nicotine is addictive whichever strength you choose.
Source: Ohm's law: power equals voltage squared divided by resistance, at a nominal 3.7V.
Habits that stretch each charge
You do not have to change your whole setup to get more from a battery. Small changes in how you vape and store the kit add up.
Shorter puffs are the quickest win. A 5-second puff uses roughly twice the energy of a 2 or 3-second one at the same power, and many vapers find shorter puffs taste better anyway.
Heat is a slow killer. Leaving a kit on a hot dashboard or windowsill speeds up battery ageing, so it loses capacity faster over the months. Room temperature is where lithium cells are happiest, both in use and in storage.
Is it time for a new battery?
Every rechargeable lithium battery wears out. After many months of daily charging, a battery may hold noticeably less than it did when new, and eventually it is not worth using.
For mods with removable cells, swapping in fresh, genuine vape batteries brings the device back to full life. For pod kits with built-in batteries, the device itself needs replacing.
Retire any battery that is swollen, gets hot during normal use, has a damaged wrap or drains while sitting unused. Those are safety signs, not just performance ones. Recycle old cells at a battery collection point rather than putting them in the bin.
Battery myths
Some battery advice is outdated and some is just wrong. Tap the cards to check what holds up.
Lithium cells are quite different from the old rechargeables many people grew up with. They do not need to be fully drained, they do not have a memory effect worth worrying about, and they are happiest kept between empty and full rather than at either extreme for long periods.
Treat them kindly with regard to heat and physical damage, and they will give you the best life they are capable of. A little care adds up to many extra weeks of use.
Quick answers
Why does my vape battery die so fast?
Usually high wattage, a low-resistance coil, long puffs, cold weather or an ageing battery. Check whether anything changed recently.
How long should a vape battery last per charge?
It depends on capacity and how you vape. Many pod kits last most of a day with moderate use; high-power setups drain much faster.
Does a lower ohm coil drain the battery faster?
Yes. Lower resistance draws more power at the same voltage, which empties the battery faster.
How long do vape batteries last before needing replacing?
It varies with use and care. After many months of daily charging most lithium batteries hold noticeably less charge.
