Mod says check atomizer, no atomizer or short? Fix it here

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Your mod reads the coil's resistance every time you fire. When the reading is missing, wildly off or too low to be safe, it refuses to fire and throws an error. Nearly always the cause is a loose coil, a dirty 510 or a coil that has failed.

The short version

  • No atomizer means the mod cannot detect a coil at all: an open circuit.
  • Atomizer short or low means the resistance is too low to fire safely.
  • Clean the 510 pin and threads and reseat the coil before anything else.
  • If a fresh coil and a second tank both fail, the mod's 510 may be at fault.

What each message means

Mods display slightly different wording, but the errors fall into two groups. No atomizer or check atomizer usually means the mod sees no connection: the circuit is open somewhere between the 510 pin and the coil.

Atomizer short or atomizer low means the reading is lower than the mod is willing to fire, often because something is touching that should not be. That protection exists to stop the battery being asked for more current than is safe.

Pod kits use similar logic with simpler messages, which our check pod guide covers. This guide is for mods with a 510 tank.

Mod error fault finder

Swapping one part at a time isolates the fault quickly. If you have a second tank or a spare coil, start there.

The goal is to work out whether the coil, the tank or the mod is the problem. A good coil in a good tank on a good mod fires every time, so whichever part makes the error follow it around is the culprit.

Note that some coils simply sit outside a mod's supported range. Very low-resistance coils may need a mod that supports them, so check both specs.

Clean and reseat

Liquid leaking down onto the 510 connection is the commonest cause of check atomizer errors. It leaves a film that interrupts the connection or, in bad cases, bridges the positive and negative.

Unscrew the tank and look at both 510 connections. Wipe the threads and the centre pin of each with a dry cotton bud. If the mod's centre pin is spring-loaded, press it gently and make sure it pops back up.

Then unscrew the coil from the tank, check the coil's own threads are clean, and screw it back in firmly by hand. A coil that is a quarter turn loose can throw intermittent errors.

  3. Check the spring pinPress gently; it should spring back.
  4. Reseat the coilUnscrew, wipe the threads and screw back in by hand.
  5. Refit and testScrew the tank on until snug, not forced.

Check the resistance

Most screen mods show the coil's resistance. Compare it with the number printed on the coil. Within a few hundredths of an ohm is normal. A reading that jumps around points to a loose connection; a reading of zero or nothing points to a short or open circuit.

Resistance matters for safety too. Lower resistance draws more current. The calculator shows the watts and amps at a given voltage, which is useful if you use removable cells: the current your setup draws must stay within the battery's continuous discharge rating.

If you need replacement cells, buy genuine 18650 batteries from a reputable brand and check their rating.

Watts and amps for your coil

That is about 17W and draws 4.6A from the battery

Common causes, ticked off

Work down this list and you will catch nearly every check atomizer and short error. Most are free to fix.

Rebuildable atomisers add another layer: a stray coil leg touching the deck, a post screw touching the wrong side, or a coil sagging onto the deck can all cause a short. Recheck the build if you have just rewicked.

If everything on the list is fine and the mod still errors with several known-good tanks, the mod's 510 or board may be at fault. Our mods range has replacements if it is beyond saving.

Atomizer error checklist

Quick answers

What does no atomizer mean on a vape mod?

The mod cannot detect a coil. Usually the tank or coil is not screwed in fully, or the 510 connection is dirty or damaged.

What does atomizer short mean?

The mod is reading a resistance near zero, usually from a failed coil, liquid on the 510, or on rebuilds, a coil leg touching the deck.

Why does my mod keep saying check atomizer?

Usually a loose coil or a dirty 510 pin. Clean both 510 connections and reseat the coil firmly by hand.

Why does my mod ask new coil?

It noticed the resistance changed. Choose yes if you fitted a new coil, no if you did not; repeated prompts suggest a loose connection.
