A mouthful of e-liquid is unpleasant and it tastes bitter, especially with nicotine. It means liquid is getting into the chimney, either from a flooded coil, spitting, or a hard draw that pulls it straight up.
The short version
- Liquid in the mouth comes from a flooded coil, spitting or overfilling.
- Hard draws on MTL kits pull liquid up the chimney.
- Clear it with gentle blows through the mouthpiece with the device off.
- Spit out any liquid and rinse with water; do not swallow it.
First, deal with the mouthful
E-liquid tastes bitter and the nicotine in it can make your mouth or throat tingle. Spit out what you can and rinse your mouth with water. Do not swallow it on purpose.
A small amount of liquid in the mouth is a common annoyance rather than an emergency. But e-liquid is not meant to be swallowed, and nicotine in large amounts can be harmful, so keep bottles away from children and pets.
If someone swallows a significant amount, or feels unwell, call NHS 111 or seek medical help. Then come back and fix the kit so it does not happen again.
How liquid gets into your mouth
There are three routes. Liquid can flood the coil and sit in the chimney, then get sucked up. It can spit off a hot coil as tiny droplets. Or liquid can sneak into the chimney during filling.
The pattern tells you which. A sudden slug of liquid is usually flooding or filling. A stream of tiny hot drops is spitting, which our gurgling and spitting guide covers in depth.
Small drops of cool liquid gathering in the mouthpiece over a long session are often condensation instead, which is a different and much milder problem.
What does it feel like?
Liquid went down the chimney. Fill against the side of the glass or pod wall and stop at the max line.
The coil is spitting. Raise the wattage slightly within range and take shorter puffs.
You are pulling it through the coil. Soften your draw and open the airflow a notch.
That is condensation. Wipe the mouthpiece and see our condensation guide.
Clear the chimney
Once liquid is in the chimney, more puffs will just bring more of it up. Push it back down first.
The technique is the same on pods and tanks. With the device off or your finger off the button, blow gently through the mouthpiece. Liquid gets pushed back down through the coil, and some may come out of the airflow holes, so hold a tissue around the base.
On a pod, you can also remove it, wrap a tissue around the mouthpiece and give the pod a firm downward flick. Wipe the inside of the mouthpiece with a twisted corner of tissue before refitting.
- Stop firingDevice off, or keep your finger off the button.
- Hold a tissue at the baseTo catch anything forced out of the airflow.
- Blow gentlyTwo or three soft blows through the mouthpiece.
- Flick and wipeA firm flick downwards, then dry the mouthpiece.
- Test carefullyA short, gentle puff to check it is clear.
Stop it happening again
The biggest fix is drawing technique. MTL pods are made for a slow, gentle sip. A hard suck creates enough pull to drag liquid straight through the cotton and up the chimney.
The next is filling. On top-fill tanks, the hole in the middle is the chimney, so aim the nozzle at the glass wall. On pods, fill to the max line and no further, then let it settle upright before vaping.
Worn coils flood more easily because the cotton loses its structure. If you have fixed technique and filling and still get liquid in your mouth, swap in a fresh coil or pod.
Myths about liquid in the mouth
A couple of these come up again and again. Tap each card to check.
The pattern to remember is that liquid in your mouth is a delivery problem, not a liquid problem. The juice is going somewhere it should not because of how it was filled, how hard it is being pulled, or because the coil is too worn to hold it.
Fix those three and the mouthfuls stop. If your kit leaks on the outside as well, our pod leaking guide covers the same causes from the other direction.
Quick answers
Why am I getting e-liquid in my mouth?
The coil is flooding or spitting, liquid got into the chimney while filling, or you are drawing too hard. Clear it and adjust your filling and puffs.
What happens if I swallow e-liquid?
Spit out what you can and rinse with water. A small amount usually just tastes unpleasant. If a significant amount is swallowed or someone feels unwell, call NHS 111.
How do I stop my pod spitting liquid?
Take shorter, gentler puffs, do not overfill, and replace the pod if it keeps flooding.
Is liquid in the mouthpiece the same as condensation?
Not quite. Condensation is cool vapour turning back to liquid. Hot drops or sudden mouthfuls come from the coil flooding or spitting.
