Vaping vs nicotine pouches: how they differ and who uses which

3 min readUpdated 4 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Vaping means inhaling vapour from a heated liquid. A nicotine pouch sits between your gum and lip, releasing nicotine with no smoke or vapour at all. Plenty of adults use both, depending on where they are. Here is how the two compare, without the hype.

The short version

  • Vapes heat e-liquid into vapour you inhale; pouches release nicotine through the gum.
  • E-liquid strength is per ml (up to 20mg/ml in the UK); pouch strength is per pouch.
  • Pouches produce no vapour, so they are discreet; vapes offer far more flavour and control.
  • Both contain nicotine, which is addictive. Neither is risk-free.

How each one works

A vape heats e-liquid on a coil, turning it into an aerosol you inhale. The liquid contains PG, VG, flavourings and usually nicotine. You control the device, the liquid and the strength.

A nicotine pouch is a small, white, pre-portioned pouch containing nicotine, plant fibres and flavourings, with no tobacco leaf. You place it between your gum and upper lip, and the nicotine is absorbed there. There is no device, no charging and nothing to see.

Browse both in our vape kits and nicotine pouches ranges.

Both are age-restricted products.

What official sources say

We stick to what official sources actually say rather than making health claims of our own.

On vaping, the NHS says nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, while being clear that it is not risk-free and is not for people who do not already smoke.

On pouches, there is far less long-term research, and the NHS does not list recreational nicotine pouches among its stop smoking aids. Licensed nicotine replacement products, such as patches, gum, lozenges and sprays, are regulated as medicines. Recreational pouches are consumer products, not licensed medicines.

Whatever you choose, nicotine is addictive.

Strength: not an apples to apples number

This is where most people get confused. E-liquid strength is in milligrams per millilitre, with a UK maximum of 20mg/ml. Pouch strength is in milligrams per pouch.

The pouches we stock range from 1.5mg (Zyn's lightest) to 20mg (the strongest Elf and Clew options). A 20mg pouch is not the same as a 20mg/ml e-liquid, and you cannot convert one to the other neatly, because absorption differs and so does how long you use each.

The sensible approach is the same either way: start low if you are not sure, and do not go stronger than you need.

Myths on both sides

Both products attract strong opinions, and not all of them are accurate. Tap each card for the facts.

One of the most common mix-ups is thinking pouches are just a modern version of chewing tobacco. They are not: nicotine pouches contain no tobacco leaf. Another is assuming the number on a pouch tin means the same as the number on an e-liquid bottle.

On the vaping side, the persistent myth is that vaping is risk-free because it is not smoking. The NHS is clear that it is not risk-free.

Facts first, opinions later.

Who tends to use which

Many adults use both, choosing by situation. Vaping suits people who enjoy flavour, the hand-to-mouth habit and the ability to fine-tune strength and device. Pouches suit people who want something discreet, need to avoid vapour around others, or work in places where vaping is not allowed. Always follow the rules of the venue you are in.

If you vape and want a lower-effort option, a refillable pod kit with nic salt is a simple setup. If you are curious about pouches, start with a lower strength, such as Zyn's 3mg or 6mg minis.

Popular pouches

Here are some of the nicotine pouches currently in stock. Packs are usually 20 pouches, priced from £2.49 to £3.99, in flavours from Spearmint and Cool Mint to Black Cherry and Pineapple.

Brands such as Zyn offer mini, slim and regular sizes, so you can choose something discreet or something larger.

All nicotine products on our site are for adults only. Read how we check on our age verification page.

If a pouch feels too strong, take it out. There is no rule that says you must keep it in for a set time, and lighter strengths are always available.
