Pod kit vs vape mod: pocket convenience or full control?

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

A pod kit is a small, self-contained device that fits a pocket and runs on 10ml liquids. A mod is a separate battery box that powers any 510 tank, up to 220W. The right one depends on how you inhale and how much fiddling you can be bothered with.

The short version

  • Pod kits: built-in battery, 2ml pods, usually 5 to 30W, ideal for MTL and nic salts.
  • Mods: built-in or 18650 batteries, 40 to 225W, any 510 tank, ideal for clouds.
  • Pod kits cost from about £8; a mod plus tank usually starts around £35.
  • Mouth to lung vapers rarely need a mod. Direct to lung vapers usually want one.

What each one is

A pod kit is an all in one device: a battery with a slot for a small pod that holds the liquid and usually the coil. Most are inhale activated, many have no buttons, and they are designed to go anywhere. Our vape kits range is full of them.

A mod is a battery box with a screen, buttons and a 510 thread on top. You screw on a separate tank, choose a coil, and set the power yourself. Some have built-in batteries; others take one or two 18650 cells. Browse them in vape mods.

The line has blurred, with big pod kits like the Smok Nord 5 reaching 80W, but the basic split still holds.

Power in the real world

Power is the clearest difference. A pod kit like the Uwell Caliburn G3 Lite tops out at 25W and the Vaporesso Xros 6 at 30W. A compact mod like the Eleaf iStick i40 runs to 40W, and dual 18650 mods like the Voopoo Vinci Spark220 reach 220W.

That does not mean more is better. A mouth to lung coil at 1.2 ohm wants 10 to 15W. Running it on a 220W mod gains nothing except weight in your pocket.

Where power matters is sub-ohm vaping. Low resistance coils at 0.15 to 0.2 ohm need 50W or more to produce the dense clouds direct to lung vapers want, and that is mod territory.

Which suits you

The single most useful question is how you inhale. Draw into your mouth first, like a cigarette? You are a mouth to lung vaper, and a pod kit is almost certainly the better choice. Breathe straight into your lungs, like a deep breath? You are a direct to lung vaper, and a mod or a sub-ohm pod kit is the way to go.

Liquid follows the device. Pod kits suit nic salts and 50/50 at higher strengths. Mods with sub-ohm tanks suit 70/30 shortfills at low strengths, usually around 3mg. Nicotine is addictive, and high strength at high power is harsh, so match the liquid to the setup.

What a mod setup really needs

A pod kit comes ready to go. A mod is only the start. Before you buy, make sure you have everything on this list, because a mod without a tank or batteries is a very expensive paperweight.

The most commonly forgotten items are batteries and a charger for 18650 mods, and the right coils for your tank. Both mods and tanks also go through liquid faster at higher power, so plan for bigger bottles.

If that list feels like a lot, it is a sign a pod kit will suit you better, at least for now.

Running costs

Pod kits are cheap to buy, from £7.99 for the Geekvape Sonder Q2. Replacement pods cost about £2.25 to £3 each and last around a week for many vapers, and a 10ml bottle of nic salt is from £2.99.

Mods cost more upfront. A compact mod starts around £20, a dual 18650 mod around £35 to £45, plus a tank at £12 to £25, plus batteries. Coils run about £1.40 to £2.40 each.

The biggest running cost on a mod is liquid. Sub-ohm vaping can use several times more e-liquid per day than an MTL pod, though shortfills bring the price per ml right down.

Test yourself

One question to check you have the core idea. It is the question that decides most purchases, and it is the one people most often skip when they buy their first setup.

Many people buy a big mod because it looks impressive, then find the draw too loose and the vapour too hot for the way they actually inhale. Others buy a tight pod kit when they really wanted clouds. Get the inhale question right first and the rest of the decision gets much simpler, from coil choice to liquid to budget.

You smoke and want a vape with a similar tight draw. Which setup fits best?

Quick answers

Is a pod kit or a mod better for beginners?

Most beginners do better with a pod kit: it is simpler, cheaper and suits the mouth to lung draw most ex-smokers prefer.

Do mods produce more vapour than pod kits?

Generally, yes. Mods run low resistance coils at higher power, producing much bigger clouds than a typical pod kit.

Can I use nic salts in a mod?

In a mouth to lung tank at low power, yes. In a sub-ohm tank at high power, high strength nic salts are too harsh; use low strength freebase.

What is a 510 connection?

The standard screw thread on top of a mod. It lets you fit almost any vape tank.
