Keep it capped, cool, dark and well out of reach of children and pets. Do that and most e-liquid tastes as intended right up to the best before date printed on the label, which is usually a year or two from when it was made.
The short version
- Light, heat and air are what age e-liquid fastest.
- Most bottles carry a best before date around one to two years after manufacture.
- A kitchen cupboard beats a windowsill, a car or a hot bathroom.
- Nicotine is toxic if swallowed: always cap bottles and keep them out of reach.
The three things that age e-liquid
E-liquid does not go off like milk, but it does change. Light, especially sunlight, breaks down flavourings and darkens nicotine. Heat speeds up every chemical change in the bottle. Air slowly oxidises the nicotine and some flavour compounds.
Keep all three to a minimum and a bottle stays fresh far longer. That is why most UK bottles are opaque or tinted and why the cap matters. It is also why the half-used shortfill you left uncapped next to the kettle tastes like a faint memory of itself.
Stocking up on deals? Store the unopened bottles properly and they will keep happily until you need them.
Where to keep it (and where not to)
The best spot is boring: a kitchen cupboard or drawer away from the oven, a high shelf in a wardrobe, or a lidded box. Somewhere dark, at steady room temperature and out of reach of small hands and curious pets.
The worst spots are the ones people actually use: windowsills, car dashboards and gloveboxes, and steamy bathrooms. A car in summer can get extremely hot inside, and that heat ruins flavour fast and can soften plastic bottles. Bathrooms swing between hot and cold several times a day, which does no favours either.
Fridges are fine for long-term stock if you want, but let the bottle warm to room temperature before vaping.
How long does e-liquid last?
Look on the label for a best before date and a batch number. Most UK bottles carry a best before somewhere around one to two years from the date they were made. Unopened and stored well, liquid usually tastes as intended until then.
Once opened, air gets in every time you refill. A 10ml bottle disappears long before that matters. A 100ml shortfill can sit around for months if you rotate flavours, so it is worth keeping it in a cupboard with the cap firmly closed rather than on your desk. If a bottle is past its date, the safest bet is to replace it.

Has my liquid gone off?
A bottle can change without being dangerous, but there are signs it is past its best. Answer one question to figure out what is going on with yours. Colour alone is not a reliable signal, because many liquids darken gently with age while still tasting fine.
Separation, where the thick VG sinks and the thinner layer floats, is usually fixed with a good shake. Anything that smells sour, looks cloudy or has bits floating in it should go in the bin. More on colour changes in why e-liquid changes colour.
What have you noticed?
Usually normal oxidation. If it is in date and tastes fine, vape it.
Shake hard for a minute. If it stays mixed, it is fine.
Bin it. Something has gone wrong with that bottle.
Replace it. Flavour and nicotine may no longer match the label.
Nicotine safety at home
This bit matters more than flavour. Nicotine liquid is toxic if swallowed and can be harmful on skin in quantity, and children and pets are most at risk because many liquids smell sweet. Every nicotine bottle sold in the UK has a child-resistant cap and a tamper-evident seal for good reason.
Always put the cap back on properly after refilling, store bottles up high or locked away, and never decant nicotine liquid into drink bottles or unlabelled containers. If a child or pet swallows e-liquid, get medical help straight away: call NHS 111 or, in an emergency, 999, and take the bottle with you.
Quick check
You are heading off on a week-long summer holiday and want to take a 100ml shortfill along. The car will be parked in the sun at the coast for most of the day, and your partner has suggested that the glovebox is the handiest place for it so it does not roll around the boot.
Is the glovebox a good idea, or is there somewhere better? Pick the best option, keeping in mind what heat does to a bottle and who might find it. Our delivery page covers how bottles travel to you, and the same common sense applies once they arrive.
Where should your shortfill go for the trip?
Quick answers
How long does unopened e-liquid last?
Usually until the best before date on the label, commonly one to two years from manufacture, if kept cool and dark.
Can you put e-liquid in the fridge?
Yes, for long-term storage. Let it warm to room temperature before vaping so it wicks properly.
Does e-liquid go off?
It ages rather than spoils. Past its best before, flavour fades and nicotine can degrade, so replace it.
What should I do if a child swallows e-liquid?
Get medical help straight away by calling NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency, and take the bottle with you.
