For a mouth-to-lung pod, buy 50/50 liquid: nic salts at 10mg or 20mg, or freebase at 12mg to 18mg. Thin liquid keeps the small coil soaked, and higher strength suits the small, tight puffs MTL kits are built for.
The short version
- 50/50 is the safest ratio for coils of 0.8 ohm and above.
- Nic salts at 10mg or 20mg suit most MTL pod users.
- Thick 70/30 liquid often causes dry hits in tight pods.
- Lightly sweetened liquids make small coils last longer.
What makes MTL different
Mouth-to-lung (MTL) means you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale, like you would with a cigarette. MTL pods have tight airflow, coils of around 0.8 to 1.2 ohm and low power, often around 10 to 15W. They make small, discreet clouds and are easy on batteries.
That small coil has small wicking holes and dense cotton. It can only soak up liquid at a certain speed, and it works best with liquid that flows easily. Because each puff is small, MTL kits also need higher nicotine strength to feel satisfying. Get those two things right and almost any flavour will taste great.

Ratio: why 50/50 wins
A 50/50 liquid is thin enough to wick quickly through MTL coils and still thick enough not to leak. That is why almost every 10ml freebase and nic salt bottle in the UK is made at 50/50. You will find a huge range in the 50/50 e-liquids section.
Some modern pods with 0.6 ohm mesh coils cope with 60/40 or even 70/30, but a classic 1.0 ohm MTL pod struggles with anything thicker than 60/40. The signs are a slowly fading flavour, dry hits after a few puffs in a row and dark cotton far sooner than expected.
50/50, ideal
Wicks fast, works in every MTL coil
60/40, usually fine
OK in 0.6 to 0.8 ohm pods
70/30, risky
Often too thick for 1.0 ohm coils
Strength: salts or freebase?
Both work in MTL pods. Nic salts are smoother, so 10mg and 20mg feel easy on the throat. Freebase at 12mg or 18mg gives a firmer throat hit that some former smokers actively prefer. Nicotine is addictive, so choose the lowest strength that leaves you satisfied.
If you came from a bar-style kit, a 20mg salt will feel familiar. If you vape constantly, 10mg may suit better. If you want a punchier catch, 12mg freebase is worth a try. Our guide on 10mg vs 20mg salts covers the choice in depth.
Your MTL liquid in one tap
Not sure where to start? Answer one question about how you like to vape and we will point you at the right bottle. Every option below is 50/50, so it will suit any standard MTL pod or pen kit, such as the Geekvape Sonder Q2 or Innokin Endura T18E.
Whatever you pick, buy two different flavours rather than two of the same. You will dodge flavour fatigue, and if one does not suit, you are not stuck with it. Small coils also tend to last longer on lighter, less sweet liquids, so a menthol or tobacco in the mix helps.
What do you want from your pod?
Bar salts at 20mg, 50/50.
Nic salt at 10mg, any flavour family.
Freebase at 12mg or 18mg, tobacco or menthol.
A lightly sweetened tobacco or menthol nic salt.
Bottles worth starting with
If you want a short list, pick from established 10ml ranges sold in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg salts or classic freebase strengths. Bar-style salts give bold, sweet fruit flavours. Traditional brands cover tobacco, menthol and dessert profiles that tend to be gentler on coils.
Good examples from our shelves include Dinner Lady Lemon Tart salt for a dessert that is not overly sickly, and the Elfliq and Bar Juice 5000 ranges for bar-style fruit. All of them are 10ml, 50/50 and made for MTL pods. If you are torn between two, buy both at the same strength and rotate them, which keeps your palate fresh and tells you quickly which style you will reorder.
Quick check
One last scenario. You have a brand new pen-style kit with a 1.2 ohm coil and you love the idea of a rich, creamy dessert. In the basket are two bottles of the same custard flavour, made by the same brand: a 50ml 70/30 shortfill and a 10ml 50/50 nic salt at 10mg.
Both are roughly the same price per millilitre once a shot is added to the shortfill. Which one should you actually put in the 1.2 ohm pen? Think about both the thickness of each liquid and the strength you would end up vaping, because a small pen cares about both.

Quick answers
What e-liquid is best for MTL?
50/50 liquid, either nic salt at 10 to 20mg or freebase at 12 to 18mg.
Can I use shortfills in an MTL pod?
Usually not well. Most are 70/30, too thick for MTL coils, and only reach about 3mg.
Is 70/30 OK in a pod?
In pods with 0.6 ohm or lower coils it often is. In 1.0 ohm MTL pods it tends to cause dry hits.
Do nic salts work in MTL pods?
Yes. MTL pods are exactly what nic salts are designed for.
