50/50 is thinner, sharper and made for small mouth-to-lung pods. 70/30 is thicker, smoother and made for sub-ohm tanks. Use the wrong one and you will get either dry hits or leaks, so here is how to pick properly.
The short version
- 50/50 wicks fast and suits coils of 0.8 ohm and above.
- 70/30 is smoother, cloudier and suits coils under 0.5 ohm.
- 50/50 bottles come in higher strengths; 70/30 is usually 0 to 6mg.
- In-between pods with 0.6 ohm mesh coils can often take either.
The head-to-head
Both ratios are built from the same two ingredients. The difference is balance. In a 50/50, half the base is propylene glycol, so the liquid is thin and the throat hit is noticeable. In a 70/30, vegetable glycerine dominates, so the liquid is syrupy and the vapour is softer and denser.
That one change ripples through everything: how quickly the coil soaks up liquid, how much vapour you see, how strong the nicotine feels and even what you pay per millilitre. The table below sets out the differences that actually matter when you are standing in front of the shelf trying to decide.
Where each one shines
50/50 is at home in pen kits and MTL pods, where low power, tight airflow and small coils need liquid that flows quickly. It is also the ratio for nic salts, so anyone vaping 10mg or 20mg is almost certainly using it. Browse the 50/50 range for the full spread.
70/30 belongs in sub-ohm tanks and higher wattage pod mods with low resistance coils. It is the standard for shortfills, which makes it the cheapest way to vape in volume. Find it under 70VG. If you own both kinds of kit, it is completely normal to keep both ratios in the cupboard.

Pick yours in one tap
The quickest way to choose is to look at the coil. Its resistance is printed on the coil head or the pod, and it tells you more than any marketing blurb. High resistance means small holes and a need for thin liquid. Low resistance means big holes and a need for thick liquid.
If your coil sits in the middle, around 0.6 ohm, you have options. Many modern pods with mesh coils at that resistance handle 70/30 nicely and give bigger flavour, while still coping with 50/50 if you want a higher strength. Pick your setup below.
What resistance is your coil?
50/50, no question. 70/30 will struggle to wick.
50/50 is safest. Some mesh pods cope with 60/40.
Either works. 70/30 for flavour, 50/50 for higher strength.
70/30 or higher. 50/50 may leak and spit.
What it does to your coils
Ratio has a real effect on coil life, but not always in the direction people expect. Thick 70/30 in a tight coil starves the cotton, causing dry patches that scorch quickly, so the coil dies in days. The same liquid in a sub-ohm coil wicks happily and can last well.
Thin 50/50 in a big sub-ohm coil can flood the chamber, which does not usually kill the coil but makes a mess and a gurgling sound you will grow to hate. Match the ratio to the coil and both last longer. Sweetness matters too, as covered in our guide to sweeteners and coil life.
Ratio myths
Ratio debates on forums can get oddly passionate. Some people swear 70/30 tastes better in everything, others that 50/50 is the only proper liquid. Both camps are partly right, because each ratio is better in its own kind of kit, and wrong when they apply it everywhere.
Flip the cards to see the most common misunderstandings cleared up. The theme running through all of them is the same: the coil decides, not personal loyalty to a number. Once you know your coil's resistance, the choice largely makes itself, and the debate becomes a lot less heated.
Quick check
You own two kits: a small MTL pen with a 1.2 ohm coil for work, and a sub-ohm tank with a 0.15 ohm coil for evenings at home. You want one flavour, a strawberry custard, in both kits, and you are trying to work out which bottles to order so neither kit misbehaves.
Which combination makes sense? Think about each coil's appetite separately rather than looking for one bottle that does everything. Many flavours are sold in both formats, so you rarely have to compromise on taste to get the ratio right.

Quick answers
Is 50/50 or 70/30 better?
Neither overall. 50/50 is better in MTL pods; 70/30 is better in sub-ohm tanks.
Can I use 50/50 in a sub-ohm tank?
It often leaks and spits. 70/30 or higher is a better match.
Can I use 70/30 in a pod?
In pods with 0.6 ohm or lower mesh coils, often yes. In tight 1.0 ohm pods, it usually causes dry hits.
Does 70/30 have less throat hit?
Yes. Higher VG feels smoother, while higher PG gives a stronger throat catch.
