Changing a pod is the easiest maintenance job in vaping: pull one out, put one in. The part people skip is the five-minute wait after filling, and that is the part that decides whether your new pod tastes great or burnt from the first puff.
The short version
- Pull the old pod straight out. Most are held by magnets.
- Fill the new pod through its side or top port, leaving a little air gap.
- Wait at least five minutes so the built-in coil can soak.
- Check the resistance on the pod matches what your kit supports.
Two kinds of pod
Refillable pod kits come in two main styles. Many pods have the coil built in, so when the coil wears out you replace the whole pod. The Vaporesso Xros, OXVA Xlim and Geekvape Q pods work this way.
Others take a separate coil that slots into the pod, so you keep the pod and only replace the coil. Uwell Caliburn G pods and the empty Voopoo Argus 2ml pod are examples.
There is also the prefilled pod system, where each pod arrives full of liquid and is thrown away when empty. Since single-use vapes were banned in the UK on 1 June 2025, rechargeable devices with swappable pods have become the norm.
Changing a pod, step by step
This sequence covers refillable pods with a built-in coil, which is what most pod kit owners use. It takes under a minute, plus the wait.
Fill slowly and stop just below the top marker. Leaving a small air gap makes it easier to seal the bung without forcing liquid down through the coil, which is a common cause of a gurgling first few puffs.
When you click the pod in, give it a quick look to make sure the contacts on the bottom are clean and dry. A drop of liquid on the contacts can stop the device recognising the pod.
- Remove the old podPull it straight up out of the device. Magnets hold most pods in place.
- Open the fill portPeel back the rubber bung on the side or slide open the top fill cap.
- Fill slowlyAngle the nozzle against the inside wall and stop just under the top line.
- Seal itPush the bung in firmly or close the top cap.
- Wait 5 minutesStand the pod upright so the built-in coil can soak.
- Click it inWipe the contacts dry, fit the pod and take a gentle first puff.
Know your pod parts
A refillable pod system has a short list of parts, and knowing them makes troubleshooting much easier. The mouthpiece is usually part of the pod. The liquid window shows your level. The coil sits at the base of the pod, above the contacts that connect it to the battery.
Airflow on pod kits is either fixed or adjustable with a slider. Firing is done by a button, an auto-draw sensor that activates when you inhale, or both.
If the device says no pod or flashes when you insert one, the contacts or magnets are the first place to look. A quick wipe with a dry cotton bud fixes most recognition problems.

Pick the right replacement pod
Replacement pods are specific to their kit, and often to a generation of that kit. The Vaporesso Xros Corex pods fit across the Xros range, but the 0.4 ohm version is only for the Pro, 4, 5 and 6 series. The OXVA Xlim V3 pods come in 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm.
Resistance changes the feel. Higher numbers give a tighter draw for nic salts, lower ones an airier draw with more vapour. If you are not sure what suits you, our guide comparing 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 ohm coils lays it out.
Always check the product page lists your kit before you order.

When to change the pod
A pod with a built-in coil wears out at the same rate as any coil, typically after one to two weeks of daily use. Swap it when the flavour turns flat, the vapour goes thin, or you start to taste anything burnt or bitter.
Look through the window too. Liquid that has turned dark brown in the pod, especially with a light-coloured juice, is a sign the coil is coated in residue.
Leaking is another sign. A pod that has started seeping from the base after weeks of good behaviour often has a tired seal or flooded coil, and replacing it is quicker than trying to rescue it.
Test yourself
The routine is simple once it is a habit: fill, seal, wait, then vape. The waiting part is the one most people cut short, especially when the old pod died mid-afternoon and you want a puff now.
If you know you get impatient, keep a spare pod filled and soaking in your bag or drawer. When the current one fades, the next is already primed and ready to go.
Most pod packs contain two to four pods, so there is usually a spare to hand. Browse replacement pods by kit to find yours.
You have just filled a new pod. When should you take the first puff?
Quick answers
How often should I change my vape pod?
Pods with built-in coils usually last one to two weeks of daily use. Change it when the flavour fades or tastes burnt.
Do I need to prime a new pod?
Yes. Fill it and wait at least five minutes before your first puff so the coil can soak.
Why does my device not recognise the new pod?
Check the contacts on the pod and device are clean and dry, and that the pod is the right model for your kit.
Can I refill a pod that came prefilled?
Prefilled pods are designed to be used once and replaced. Refillable pods are the ones made for topping up.
