A mouth to lung tank is built for a tight, cigarette-like draw: higher resistance coils, narrow airflow and low power. It sips liquid, runs for ages on a small battery and works brilliantly with nic salts. If you want a vape that feels close to smoking, this is your tank.
The short version
- MTL tanks use coils of 1.0 ohm or higher at around 8 to 15W.
- Narrow airflow gives a tight draw, similar to a cigarette.
- Best with 50/50 or nic salt liquids.
- Small, light and economical on liquid and battery.
What makes a tank MTL
The layout of an MTL tank is the same as any tank: drip tip, top cap, glass, coil and airflow ring. The difference is in the scale. The airflow holes are small, the chimney is narrow, and the coils are higher resistance with smaller wicking ports.
When you draw, only a little air passes over the coil, so the vapour stays dense and warm. You pull it into your mouth first, then inhale, much like smoking.
The narrow drip tip helps too. A wide sub-ohm tip on an MTL tank lets the vapour cool and spread too quickly, which dulls the flavour.

MTL tanks in our range
Several of the tanks we stock are MTL designs. The Innokin Go S and Go Z, the Endura T20-S, the Prism T18E Pro and the Aspire K3 are all built for a tight draw. The Aspire Nautilus 3 is a long-standing favourite with adjustable airflow from tight MTL to a loose restricted lung.
MTL tanks tend to be slim. Most are 18 to 20mm wide, which pairs neatly with pen-style batteries and compact mods. The bars show widths from our listings.
If you want an all-in-one setup, kits like the Innokin Endura T20-S starter kit pair a matching battery and tank in one box.

Liquid and nicotine for MTL
MTL coils have small wicking holes, so they need thinner liquid. A 50/50 VG/PG ratio is ideal. Thick 70/30 liquids can struggle to soak in quickly enough and cause dry hits.
Nic salts are made for MTL. They deliver nicotine smoothly at higher strengths, typically 10 to 20mg, which suits the small volume of vapour per puff. 50/50 freebase liquids also work well, usually at 6 to 18mg.
Nicotine is addictive, so choose a strength that keeps you comfortable, and consider stepping down over time if that is your goal. The UK legal maximum is 20mg/ml.

Setting up for the perfect draw
MTL tanks reward a little fine-tuning. Most have an airflow ring with several hole sizes or a slider. Start with the smallest setting, take a few puffs, then open it up a step at a time until the draw feels right. Give each position several puffs, because the first draw after a change always feels odd.
Power matters too. Most MTL coils sit between about 8 and 15W. If your battery has adjustable power, start at the bottom of the coil range and nudge up for warmer vapour.
The steps below take you from a new tank to a good first puff.
- Prime the coilA few drops on the cotton through the ports and down the centre.
- Fill with 50/50 or nic saltFill to just below the top, avoiding the chimney.
- Wait 5 minutesThinner liquids soak in quickly but still need a moment.
- Close the airflowStart with the smallest airflow hole or slider position.
- Low power firstSet the bottom of the coil range, then adjust to taste.
MTL myths
MTL is sometimes seen as the beginner option you graduate from. Plenty of experienced vapers stick with it for years because it is discreet, efficient and delivers flavour beautifully.
It also gets blamed for problems that really come from mismatched liquid. A thick shortfill in an MTL coil will dry hit, and the tank gets the blame, even though the tank is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Tap the cards to clear up the confusion.
If you are deciding between MTL and sub-ohm, our guide to sub-ohm tanks covers the other side.
Test yourself
MTL tanks are some of the most forgiving setups in vaping once the liquid matches. Choose a 50/50 or nic salt, keep the power modest, and a 2ml fill goes a long way. Coils tend to last well too, because low power is gentle on cotton.
Browse our tanks for MTL options, or check the matching coils in our Innokin Prism S range if you already own an Endura T20-S.
MTL tanks also make a lot of sense if battery life matters to you. Running at 8 to 15W, a modest pen battery can last a full day where a sub-ohm setup would need a recharge by lunch. Here is one question to check you have it.
Which liquid is best suited to an MTL tank?
Quick answers
What is an MTL tank?
A mouth to lung tank uses coils of 1.0 ohm or more with tight airflow to give a cigarette-style draw.
What wattage for an MTL tank?
Usually 8 to 15W, depending on the coil. Start at the bottom of the range printed on it.
Can I use nic salts in an MTL tank?
Yes, they are ideal. Nic salts at 10 to 20mg suit the low vapour volume of MTL vaping.
Why does my MTL tank give dry hits?
Usually because the liquid is too thick. Switch to 50/50 or nic salt and prime the coil properly.
