How to use a vape properly: the puff, the pause and the breath

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Vaping is not smoking, and the people who struggle most are the ones who drag on a vape like a cigarette. Take a slow, gentle draw for two to four seconds, let the vapour sit in your mouth, then breathe it in with a little air. Do that and the coughing, the weak flavour and the gurgling mostly vanish.

The short version

  • Draw slowly and gently for 2 to 4 seconds. Harder is not better.
  • MTL: mouthful first, then breathe in. DTL: one long, open breath.
  • Close the airflow for a tighter draw, open it for a cooler, airier one.
  • Leave a few seconds between puffs so the coil can re-soak.

The basic mouth-to-lung puff

Most pod kits are built for mouth-to-lung vaping, and the technique has a rhythm to it. You are not trying to suck hard like a thick milkshake. You are pulling gently, like sipping through a narrow straw, long enough for the coil to warm up and make a decent mouthful of vapour.

The pause is the bit people skip. Taking the vape away from your lips and then breathing in mixes the vapour with air, which makes it smoother and stops it hitting the back of your throat all at once. Follow the steps once or twice slowly and it becomes automatic within a day.

One proper MTL puff
  1. Seal your lipsClose your lips around the mouthpiece. No need to bite.
  2. Draw gentlyPull slowly for 2 to 4 seconds, like sipping through a narrow straw. Press the button first if your kit has one.
  3. Hold in your mouthTake the vape away and let the vapour sit for a second.
  4. Breathe inInhale the mouthful into your lungs with a little fresh air.
  5. Breathe outExhale normally. Wait a few seconds before the next puff.

How long each puff should be

A cigarette drag is short and sharp. A vape needs longer, because the coil has to heat up before it produces much vapour. If you take a one-second puff, half of it is spent warming the coil and you get a thin, disappointing wisp.

Most MTL vapers settle on two to four seconds. DTL vapers on sub-ohm tanks often go longer. Very long puffs are not better, though: most kits cut out automatically after a set time to protect the coil, and going right to the limit every time dries the wick and leads to burnt hits.

Button or auto draw: how to fire it

Some kits fire as soon as you inhale; a sensor picks up the airflow. Others need you to hold a button while you draw. With a button kit, press first, then start drawing half a second later, and let go as soon as you stop pulling. Firing without drawing just cooks the cotton.

With an auto-draw kit, the gentler your draw, the more reliably it fires. A very soft pull may not trigger the sensor; a frantic one floods it. If you are still choosing a device, our draw-activated vs button guide covers the trade-offs in detail.

Getting the airflow right

Most pod kits have an airflow slider, ring or swappable insert. Closing it makes the draw tighter, warmer and more like a cigarette. Opening it makes the draw airier and cooler, with a bit less flavour intensity and more vapour.

Start with it nearly closed if you are coming from cigarettes, then open it a notch at a time over a few days. If you are coughing, try opening it slightly: a tight draw on a strong liquid concentrates everything at the back of your throat. Our guide to why you cough when you start vaping has more on that.

Pro tip

Technique myths that cause trouble

A lot of beginner problems come from habits carried over from smoking or from bad advice. Pulling harder, puffing faster and holding vapour in your lungs for ages all feel like they should work. They mostly just cause coughing, flooded pods and burnt coils.

Tap each card to see what actually works. Getting your technique right costs nothing and fixes a surprising number of the issues people blame on their device. Before you send a kit back as faulty, try a day of slow, gentle puffs with a pause in between. It is the cheapest repair in vaping.

Practise these for a day

Technique sticks fastest when you pay attention to it for one day, then stop thinking about it. Run through this list on your first few puffs and tick each one off as it starts to feel natural.

If something still feels off after a day, the problem is probably not you. Check the strength and liquid against our MTL vs DTL guide and make sure the pod is the right one for your liquid. A thin 50/50 or nic salt in an MTL pod should feel smooth by now, and the draw should feel easy rather than a fight.

Quick answers

How long should you inhale on a vape?

Two to four seconds for a mouth-to-lung pod kit. Sub-ohm DTL vapers often take longer, slower puffs of around four to six seconds.

Do you inhale vape into your lungs?

Yes. With MTL you draw into your mouth first, then breathe it into your lungs. With DTL you inhale straight to your lungs.

Why is my vape not producing much vapour?

Usually puffs are too short, the airflow is fully closed, the battery is low or the coil is worn out. Try a slower, longer draw first.

How many seconds between vape puffs?

Leave at least a few seconds so the cotton can soak back up. Rapid chain vaping is a common cause of dry, burnt hits.
