MTL vs DTL: mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung, explained properly

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is the cigarette-style puff: a tight draw into your mouth, then a breath into your lungs. Direct-to-lung (DTL) is one long, open breath straight down, like sucking air through a wide straw. Every other difference, from coil to nicotine to how fast you get through liquid, follows from that one choice.

The short version

  • MTL is a tight, cigarette-like draw. DTL is an airy breath with big clouds.
  • MTL uses higher-resistance coils, low power and 10mg to 20mg liquids.
  • DTL uses sub-ohm coils, high power and 3mg to 6mg, 70/30 liquids.
  • RDTL sits in the middle and suits many pod kits with a lower-ohm pod.

Two ways to take a puff

With MTL you draw gently into your mouth for a few seconds, pause, then breathe that mouthful into your lungs with a little extra air. The airflow is restricted, so it feels tight, just like a cigarette. Clouds are small and discreet.

With DTL you skip the mouth stage and inhale straight to the lungs in one open breath. The airflow is wide open and the coil runs hot, so you get a large, warm cloud and a lot of flavour per puff.

Neither is better. They suit different people, and most smokers start on MTL because the draw feels familiar.

How the two styles compare

The table shows why you cannot just pick a style and keep the same liquid. A DTL coil vaporises far more liquid per puff, so if you used 20mg nic salt in it you would be taking in a lot of nicotine very quickly and the throat hit would be brutal. That is why DTL vapers use low strengths and thicker liquid.

MTL runs cooler, sips liquid and pairs with higher nicotine. If you are coming from cigarettes and want something that sorts cravings without big clouds, the MTL column is your column.

RDTL: the middle setting most pod kits now offer

Restricted direct-to-lung (RDTL) is a direct inhale with some airflow resistance. It is warmer and cloudier than MTL but nowhere near a full sub-ohm tank. Many modern pod kits do it with a lower-resistance pod, often around 0.4 to 0.8 ohm, and the airflow slider opened up.

RDTL suits people who started on MTL, want more flavour, and do not want to carry a big mod. Strength usually drops to around 5mg to 10mg salt. The Smok Nord coils show the whole spread in one pack range: a 1.4 ohm head for MTL and a 0.6 ohm mesh head for looser, cloudier vaping.

How much liquid each style gets through

This is the part people forget when they move up to DTL. A sub-ohm coil running at 60W boils off liquid many times faster than a 1.2 ohm pod at 12W, so a 2ml MTL pod that lasts you a day would last a DTL vaper a few minutes of steady puffing.

That is why DTL vapers buy 50ml and 100ml shortfills and MTL vapers buy 10ml bottles. If you are on a tight budget, MTL is far cheaper to run. The figures below are typical daily use for a moderate vaper, so treat them as a guide, not a rule.

Find your style

Still not sure which way to go? Think about what you are replacing and what you enjoy about it. A smoker who likes the tight pull of a cigarette is a natural MTL vaper. Someone who has vaped for a while and wants more flavour is a good fit for RDTL or DTL.

Pick the answer that matches you. If you land on DTL, have a look at sub-ohm tanks and pair one with a mod that has the power to run it. If you land on MTL, read our guide to choosing a nicotine strength next.

Myths about the two styles

Vape shops and forums are full of confident advice about MTL and DTL, and a fair bit of it is muddled. The commonest one is that DTL is the grown-up version you graduate to. Plenty of people vape MTL for years because it suits them, and plenty of DTL vapers go back.

Tap each card to flip it. If any of these surprise you, it is worth rereading the comparison table above before you buy a new device. Changing style is easy, but changing it with the wrong liquid in the tank is how people end up with a sore throat and a tank of wasted juice.

Quick answers

What does MTL mean in vaping?

Mouth-to-lung: you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs, the same way most people smoke a cigarette.

Is MTL or DTL better for quitting smoking?

Most smokers find MTL feels more familiar, and it pairs with the higher nicotine strengths heavy smokers usually need. Talk to your local NHS stop smoking service for support.

Can you use nic salts in a DTL tank?

It is not recommended. Sub-ohm coils vaporise a lot of liquid, so nic salt strengths of 10mg to 20mg are far too much. Use 3mg to 6mg freebase instead.

What is RDTL?

Restricted direct-to-lung: a direct inhale with some airflow resistance, usually from a 0.4 to 0.8 ohm pod. It sits between MTL and full DTL.
