How to choose your first vape flavour without wasting money

3 min readUpdated 3 Oct 2026By the Spectrum Vaping team

Your first flavour is a guess, so make it an educated one. Pick from the flavour families you already enjoy in food and drink, buy two small bottles of different types, and rotate them. That one habit beats any bestseller list, and it saves you from the classic mistake of buying a multipack of something you are bored of by Wednesday.

The short version

  • Start from flavour families you already like: tobacco, menthol, fruit, ice or dessert.
  • Buy two 10ml bottles of different families, not a multipack of one.
  • Rotate daily to keep flavour fatigue away.
  • Sweet dessert flavours taste great but wear coils out faster.

Start from what you already enjoy

The quickest route to a flavour you will like is the one you already know. If you take your coffee black and eat sharp apples, a sweet custard is a risky first buy. If you live on mints, a menthol or spearmint is a safe place to start. Your tastes in food and drink are a better guide than any vape review.

Many ex-smokers reach for tobacco first because it feels familiar, and plenty stay there. Others find a fruit or menthol helps the vape feel like something new rather than a substitute. Neither is wrong. Tap the answer that fits your palate for a family to start with.

Your starting family

What do you reach for in food and drink?

The main flavour families compared

Almost every liquid on the shelf falls into one of a handful of families, and each has a personality. Tobacco blends range from light and nutty to dark and rich. Menthol gives a cool, clean finish that many ex-smokers like. Fruit is the biggest family by far, from single flavours like mango to mixed berries.

Ice flavours add a cooling agent to fruit. Desserts like custard are rich and sweet, and they are the hardest on coils because sweeteners caramelise on the cotton. The table sums up what each family tastes like and how kind it is to your pod.

Try before you commit

The cheapest way to find your flavour is to buy small and rotate. Two or three 10ml bottles from different families cost far less than a multipack you might not finish, and they give you something to switch to when the first one starts tasting flat.

Give each flavour a fair go: at least a full day, ideally across a couple of pod fills. A new flavour in an old, gunked coil tastes muddy, so put a promising flavour in a fresh pod before you decide you do not like it. Then follow the steps below and keep notes on your phone. You will have a shortlist within a week.

A one-week flavour trial
  1. Pick three familiesOne bottle each from three different families, say menthol, fruit and tobacco.
  2. Fresh pod for eachStart each new flavour in a fresh pod or coil so old residue does not muddy it.
  3. One full day eachVape each for a whole day before judging. First puffs can mislead.
  4. RotateCycle through all three for the rest of the week.
  5. Keep the winnersBuy bigger quantities only of the ones you kept reaching for.

Popular places to start

If you would rather begin with something plenty of other vapers already like, menthol is a strong all-rounder. It is clean, it does not cling to the coil the way sweet liquids do, and it doubles as a palate reset when your other flavours start tasting flat.

The products below are menthol liquids from our shelf, all suited to pod kits. Check the strength and the nicotine type on each before you add one to the basket: nic salt for most pod kits at 10mg or 20mg, and freebase if you want a sharper catch at a lower strength. Nicotine is addictive, so pick a strength that matches your current habit rather than going higher.

Menthol liquids to start with

Sweetness and your coil

The sweeter the liquid, the faster your coil gunks up. Most sweet liquids use sucralose, which does not vaporise cleanly and leaves a dark, sticky residue on the cotton. That is why dessert and candy lovers often go through pods twice as fast as menthol vapers.

You do not have to give up the flavours you enjoy. Just know the trade-off and plan for it. Alternating a sweet bottle with a clear one is the easiest way to get the best of both, and if a pod suddenly tastes off, our guide on when to change a coil or pod tells you whether it is finished.

Pro tip

Flavour myths

Flavour advice tends to be very personal, and some of it gets repeated until it sounds like fact. One that does the rounds is that ex-smokers must start on tobacco. Plenty do, but plenty never touch it and are perfectly happy.

The four cards below each flip to a correction. The bigger point is that there is no right answer to which flavour you should vape, only what works for you and how it treats your coil. Everything else is preference, and preference is allowed to change month to month.

Quick answers

What is the best vape flavour for beginners?

There is no single best. Start with families you already enjoy in food and drink: tobacco, menthol, fruit or a fruit ice are common first picks.

Why can I not taste my vape flavour?

Usually flavour fatigue or a worn coil. Switch to a very different flavour, like menthol, or try a fresh pod.

Do sweet flavours ruin coils?

They wear them out faster. Sweeteners caramelise on the cotton, so alternate sweet liquids with clearer ones.

Should I start with tobacco flavour?

Only if you like the idea. Many ex-smokers prefer fruit or menthol so the vape feels like something new.
